a buddy of mine has a nice set of centerline wheels from a second gen firebird there 17x8 with a 5 inch backspace in my other posting i was informed that they will fit fine in the rear but they will probably rub up front so im wondering how safe it is to use wheel adapters up front to break them out a little also the tires are 255s at all 4 corners and i have moog big block springs up front so its a little nose high if that makes a difference im not planing on drag racing the car but i plan on beating on it when i get the chance :D

The "standard" back spacing on a 69 with 8" wheels is 4.75". I'd try them as is - if they rub it will likely be on the subframe. If you feel they need to spaced out, a 1/4" or so spacer should do the trick. You won't need an adapter - just a spacer. Yes they are safe. You might need longer wheel studs. 255 is pretty wide for the fronts by the way, but it's been done.
