Hey guys...trying to tie up the remaining parts for my engine install in a couple of months. I completed my 383 a month ago, but had to put in storage due to moving, and won't have out for another couple of months.

Having issues deciding over which carb to get. Pure street engine that won't see the high side of 6500, Edelbrock 170cc heads, Air Gap intake, and 2204 cam (234/[email protected]).

Edelbrock recommends an 800 AVS, but that seems too big based on the calculations, which says closer to a 750 Performer, but I like the extra features of the Thunder Series, which is only offered in a 650. The build is set up for more low end torque. Would a larger carb balance it out on the top end, or should I run with the 650 AVS and call it a day?

A street car is operating on its idle circuits 90% of the time. There is one carb out there that blows every other carb out of the water when it comes to sophisticated idle circuits...the QJet. Call Sean Murphy at SMI and see what he says. You can believe what he tells you.

I've been using a SMI State 2 Q Jet on my 68 with 327 for several years; great carb IMO.

I gotta admit, I had lots of Chevy engines back in the day when they first came on the market (late 60's & early 70's) and I think I had more fun with Quadrajet carbs than any of the Holleys.

It was a little more difficult to properly set up a Q-Jet than a Holley, but the Q-Jets always performed admirably when set up correctly. Very pleasant to drive and very nice throttle response. I used Q-Jets on SB's and BB's.

Plus, another terrific feature of using a Q-Jet is that it was easier to get a street race. When you pop the hood and your opponent sees a Q-Jet, he will think you're an easy mark! Of course, this was back in the day when street racing was relatively safe, and most cars were only capable of 13 or 14 second 1/4 miles.
