i have a 72 camaro with the stock 350 and i want to put something bigger in. anyone know if a cadillac 500 engine has the same motor mounts and will it bolt up to my transmiison. it has the muncie 4 speed.

But I figure that you can get into good old JCW and come up w/ both a front cross member mount set-up as well as a tranny cross member that can be relatively easy be made to work. I want to say that you will need an Eldo oil pan.

And please check into two places!

I think Max Torque Specialists and Cad Performance Parts are two places that cater to this!

The way to do this is to hang the engine along w/ the tranny down in her, then use a short level on the intake carb flange so that you can set it "level" up front and then raise/lower the tranny mount w/i stock Cad/Camaro spec's so that everything sit's CORRECTLY!

I've done this way back in HS when I installed a '51 232" Stude V-8 Stick OD in my '52 Willis Areo Eagle HT car!

And believe it or not, this is the easy part!

The hard part is in the details of the rad., the throttle, the shifter and exhaust crap to make it like a stocker.

And you've picked about the only engine that I would ever install outside of a Chevy 409 "W" engine in our old cars only b/c to me, our history show's us that guys used Cad's to go fast back then!!

And I installed an old very hopped up .060" overbore 409"W" dump truck engine w/ trips on it in my car way back then on ALL my 350SS engine's stuff. Sucker looked like it came from the factory stock!

And to this day, I love the old "W" chrome valve covers and great big 348 trip equipped engine's breather top.

PS., and I can't prove it, but I honestly figure that the old 232" Stude that I installed in my old Willis was the little Cad V-8 of I think was one of the two that Cad designed back before '49 and then Cad sold it to Stude and kept the much bigger 331!

im trying to decide between a 427 and the 500. a 427 is harder to find tho and truck 427s dont have that much torque/hp id have to really rebuild them and i dont have that much money for all the high performance parts hah, thats why im leaning towards the caddy

Screw that 500 Caddy and put a big block chevy in that baby. You can make 550 ftlbs at 3k with a 489/496/502 all day long.

The coin spent to fab a 500 caddy in your 2nd gen camaro might just add up to the cost of a good used baby roots blower.if the 350 is healthy and perhaps a cowl hood..the insta torque a roots style offers off idle will feel and act like a much larger naturally aspirated engine.

whats the best way to beef up an engine for the cheapest amount? theres cams headers nice carbs, anything else?

First and foremost. What are your plans for the car? Are you racing it? Street car? Or occasional race car with mainly street use? What drivetrain will you have behind this mammoth motor you want? All this has to be taken in to consideration first..

its mainly a street car but i will probably bring it to the strip every once in a while. ill probably keep the same drivetrain that came with it unless it needs to be changed.

Please hunt up the two places I mentioned to check into!

As far as a stock 500 Cad, it's the early one that is 10 to 1 CR'd that make's the big power!

But still stock, it will be all over at 4,000 rpm!

You want to play w/ it and install BB valves in it's heads, then B&S it out to 550" EASY and add a good 280/285 cam and whatever aftermarket intake manifold you can come up w/ along w/ a Cad header flange kit to fit either a pair of 460 Ford or BB Chevy headers on her and I bet you won't believe the power it will make up to about 5 to 5500 rpm!

I'm talking way over 600 t and more than likely 500+ hp......

Talk about GRUNT!!

He, He!! All in a package that weigh's 60 pounds less than a BB Chevy!!

All Chevy 70-81 F-73-77 A and full size bodies use the same mounts with chevy engines,and the full size car use the same frame with both a chevy and caddy engine,so it seeems safe to assume that the angle of the sides of the engine cradle are the same for all these cars.I am not sure if the trans mount location is the same for short and long tail th400's,but it reasons to say that if that is the case you could use a stock camaro th400 crossmember.If you can locate a short tail BOP TH350,that would bolt right in place of your chevy trans{assuming you have a TH350}.As for the front mounts,the best way to go is to bolt a set of Caddy engine mounts and frame stands,Lay the engine and trans in the engine compartment,bolt the trans to the stock mount,lay the engine onto the cradle,level the engine out into the correct position mark the perimeter of the mounts,lift the engine,drill the holes in the frame for the mounts,and bolt everything in place,if you are lazy you could just leave the engine in and weld the frame stands to the frame.As for things like the radiator,manifolds and accessories,the Camaro engine compartment is modeled after the 73 and later A body,which is about the same size as the big car.All the Caddy stufff should fit.The Camaro radiator support is very wide and should fit the Caddy radiator and shroud with no issue.If you want A/C stuff,the lines,condenser,and compressor from the caddy engine should lay into the engine compartment fairly well,and may even hook direct to a factory Camaro suitcase.Overall this is an easy swap,the 70-81 Camaro engine bay is huge and fits just about any car engine you can throw at it.Good luck.

Thanks Rich for the back-up!

Like I said, the big 500 Cad is one engine I will transplant into our old cars!

I've done a 409 "W" engine and it fell in there like stock way back then. Actually easier than my 496 BB.
