I have a set of the old style aluminum slot wheels that are in need of some sprucing up. Does anyone know what kind of products are out there that will make these rims look better? I like the old style 70s hotrod look and would like to clean these up some. Any ideas? Thanks

Wet/dry with 320 grit and kero
Then 600 grit
Then a buffer wheel on drill to polish high speed with polishing rouge
Then final polish at slow speed
Finish with some good car polish

Older postes have more detail

I will try the wet sanding and buffing and if they do not come out nice I had never thought about the powder coat. That something to consider also. Thanks

Any luck bringing them back to life? I have an old set of slotted mags that used to be on my Chevelle that have been gather dust for over 20 years. Been seriously considering trying to refurb them too. Mine have no center caps and I have no idea what brand they originally were (maybe American Racing?). I'm guessing I'll have to measure the diameter of the center opening, but are center caps still available?

I had an old set of Ceverons before the cragars...the center caps where broken, gone
The local boy racer speed shop had some after market plastic ones
I painted the tops the same as the car and looked good
I also painted the insides of the mag spokes the same as the car
They where ugly mags, but making match the car, they looked good and ment to belong to it.

Just looked today, out of 3 pairs of slotted wheels, only 1 pair are 15's and of course they are in the worst condition. I'm putting 4 wheel disc brakes on the car, so I don't think 14's will fit.

my slots (above) and current cragar ss 14s fit over the factory front disks fine.
Interesting. I have the disc brake kit that Matt's Camaros sells and currently in the process of installing them. Not sure if those require more room or not compared to stock discs, but the instructions say I need 15" wheels or larger. Guess I'll slap one of the slotted 14's on there when I'm finished and see first hand if it fits.

Well I Wet sanded the rims with 320 grit paper followed by 600. Then went over them with rubbing compound. They look alot better than they did before. I was happy with the way they came out. They are not perfect but will look good on the car from several feet away.

Use Mothers Mag and Aluminum polish after sanding with the 600. I did. It took a lot of elbow grease, but came out really looking good. Make sure you keep a "clean" terry cloth avail. for buffing. You might want to buy a whole box of them, trust me, you'll know why after a couple minutes... Good luck:yes:

I had similar problem, wheels looked real bad. I'm not done cleaning them yet, but already looks much better. Used drill with wire wheel. Next step as stated above is 600 grit sand paper and some polish

I picked these up real cheap at a pawn shop a few years ago. Pretty beat up, but I didn't bother with repairing any of the nicks/chips. I used it more as an exercise/experiment to try restoring them since I never had before.

I gave them a low psi bead blast to give a clean, remove stains, and give even base to start with. Then grey scotch brite followed with fine steel wool. I liked the satin finish that gave, so that's where I stopped. They would've polished up real well had I chosen to go further.
