How far can you go with compression to stay with pump gas?

It seems that 9.5 or 10 will cut it but what's real world on todays gas with a mark IV 454 in a 70's muscle car?

this really opened my eyes as to how much compression you really need for the cam you want to run.

Now I understand why that 'ol man' said I better keep my compression under 11.1:1 if I wanted pump gas with a cam smaller than 230deg duration...
