I'm thinking of purchasing a working cowl induction. A new one. The one that came on 69 camaros. Will this add horsepower and does it work well? I already have a cowl induction hood so I'm thinking of setting up a ram air setup with a functional air induction system on my
69 camaro, witch has a 468 in it.

Watcha think?

Are you talking about connecting your cowl induction hood?
Or are you talking about using a normal hood and hooking an air box to the cowl just above the heater box?

In either case, books I've read say the main benefit is from cold air not ram induction. There is good positive air pressure at the base of the windshield, but it will not help a lot unless you are going over 150mph.

The early 80's Z/28 factory snorkle with hose type cold air system was shown to be .2 seconds quicker in the quarter over an open element filter.

I'm talking about installing the cowl induction system for my BB on my 69 camaro. And is the answer to my question yes, since .2 seconds is about 40 horspower in the quarter mile. I was just saying I already have a cowl induction hood.

The test I read was with a fairly stock small block so with your larger engine it would be worth it. Just don't worry about getting any ram effect, very little to gain from that.

I believe the way the orig cowl hood worked was intake flap was closed at low throttle... wasnt suppose to open until you had your foot in it a little..... opening time adjusted by position of throttle operating switch.....If you want max effect, leave the selonoid and all the related stuff off and either prop the door open or, I suggest, leave it off.... this is what I did and replaced the flapper with a piece of aluninum mesh as a grill to keep out bugs, birds and little kids.
