I always put the gear in my kitchen oven at about 400 degrees for a few minutes until it is good and hot to the touch, then using heat resistant gloves take the gear from the oven and it should slide right on. If it does not, reheat it to a higher temperture until it does slide on to bottom out.

I would not heat the gear too much, it may affect the wear resistance. We use a short piece of pipe that fits over the crank to "beat" the gear on. If you have a harmonic damper installer, you can use it with a piece of pipe to push the gear on also. It really goes on pretty easy and will not damage anything.

I agree with Bill. Also, when beating the gear on it's better to use many smaller hits with a hammer than use "Thor's Best" if you know what I mean.

Be careful removing the old one as well. Use a good puller and take your time.

sorry to dig up an old post, but how do you know when the gear is on far enough? does it bottom out somewhere or something?

bottoms out on the crank...only goes so far...when you`re tapping on as bill suggested, once it bottoms out, the noise the tapping makes will change...thats when ya know she`s beat...lol...

A good 1" cold chisel will crack a stock PM sprocket right off if you hit it right at the corner of the key way in the teeth in one easy blow!!

Careful if you have a cast crank tho b/c you can pop the snout off in a heartbeat if you hit it WAY TOO HARD!!

Not really b/c after I quit the RR in 8/'68 to go back to Engine School I spent a summer working in the boneyard scrapping engines for metal and we cleaned the old cast crank "Y"-block Fords that way. Whack the snout w/ a 3 pound Ford tool and off came the snout and timimg sproket and chain is all.. He, He!!

We cleaned many an Olds 4-speed Hydro by splitting them right down the middle like cracking an egg.

And the engine pile we were scrapping was as big as a 3-car garage and had darn near every kind of engine made in it back then..

The coolest one was a Ford V-8/60!!! Cute as a bug's ear!!! It's like a half-sized Flathead is all!!!
