My 68 was restored several years ago which included a new gas tank and sending unit. I added aftermarket console with gauges. The low FUEL warning light comes on a lot especially when I round a corner and it will occur with half a tank of gas.

How accurate are the low FUEL warning systems you guys that have them? Does it sound like the sending unit?

My low fuel light would come on and off when I was near 1/4 left in the tank. The float arm in the tank can be 'adjusted' by bending it so it registers close to what you want, Sadly its a mess to drop the tank, adjust the arm (like your toilet float adjusting), then go for awhile and see how it reacts to that adjustment. I left mine alone and just knew I was above 1/4 when the light started to flicker on curves or hills etc. I dont know of any other way to adjust it.

As Jim said the float moves a lot in the tank and the original style LFWM units only have a fixed set-point. Reach it and it triggers whether its for a micro second or ten minutes.

The replacement style unit from M & H electric allows you to set the set-point and has the ability to buffer the set point for a few seconds so those mach 2 corners we take won't trigger on a temporary drought in the tank.

The pros of using this system is that it allows you to set a more realistic set-point. The factory 1/8 to 1/4 is unrealistic these days. In the late 60's there were gas stations on every corner, now they have been replaced by bigbox drugstores. You can also install this module in vehicles that do not have the console gauge package and piggyback it off the dash carrier fuel gauges, and simply run a circuit to the existing 69 FUEL light option.

The cons of the unit would be it is a flat box with no real mounting considerations but it can live comfortably under the gauge pack of the console. If added to vehicle without console gauges you can velcro it to the back of the dash carrier or zip tie it away from danger.

I'm using a tube style sender from Classic Instruments in my EFI tank. the movement of the fuel in the tank has little if any effect on the gauge.

I'm not sure if they are available for OEM tanks.
