It's a baby solid lifter cam meant for a 283. In a 327 there would be very little lope. Nice thing about it, the ramps are very gentle and it will rev to the moon with little chance of valve float with very little spring pressure.

I used the comp cams XS274 solid cam in my 327.

there is something about the factory camshafts! they have this sound you done hear with todays cams! i think it might have something to do with the low lift numbers of the old days.

Unless you're using factory heads, I wouldn't run an oldschool cam, much better out there, technology has come a long way. If it's relatively stock and you could get it free or for a good price, I'd run it, they sound nice. Oldschool cams generall have a tighter LSA (meaning lower number) which adds to the lope factor.

The "097" cam was used in 327's in '62 and '63 (340hp carbed and 360hp fuelies) in addition to the 2x4 and fuelie 283 applications from '57 through '61. Nice well-behaved street cam, sweet sound of solid lifters, uses plain ordinary Grandma valve springs (#3911068, 90# closed, 190# open). Federal-Mogul/Speed-Pro #CS-113R is an exact blueprint duplicate. :thumbsup:

being used in the 340hp and 360 vettes is why i asked about this cam. if i remember right alot of the vettes had 3.36 gears. i am upgrading to the 8.5 ten bolt and it has 3.23 gears in it. thought if it would work out ok it be a nice way to have a solid lifter cam and nicer gear to be able to drive it on the hiway. that along with no problems being an easy profile. i was thinking z/28 springs would be a nice up grade. by they way its a 4 speed.

Every Corvette application of the "097" cam with a 4-speed came with a 3.70 axle as standard, with options to 4.11 and 4.56; you could also order 3.08, 3.36, or 3.55, but hardly any of those were sold.

Z/28 springs are also #3911068, same as the springs in Grandma's 307 Powerglide station wagon; there's a lot of misinformation out there. :thumbsup:

z/28 has a red color 110lbs on the seat @ 1.700 260 lbs open @ 1.250. most stock springs are 90 lbs on the seat. i not trying to start any touble just showing what i know

The 3927142 springs were used with the 3927140 Mechanical - 257/269 - .493/.512 - 112 - Off Road cam, not the factory installed 67 68 69 Z28 cam.

ok i learn something everyday! when my dad built the motor in the mid 70s, he ran the z/28 or 30-30 cam. these were the springs he bought for it. he broke one and bought a replacement in 1977... wich i found the box for and the spring inside with a bill of sale! $1.40 ... thats funny! so i always thought original z/28 used the same springs. on a side note when i took the motor apart i found one spring that was not red.. he never installed the new spring...

Where's pdq67 when you need him? If you do a search here on member 'pdq67' or Google '097' there is a ton of info on that cam. I miss that guy...

Many of the sellers of today's Z-28 springs are actually selling
a remake of the original 142 red oxide colored spring. Check the specs and you will see what I mean.
I still remember in 1970 purchasing the 140 cam with the 142 springs;
I installed the cam in an LT-1. That engine was dead until it hit 2800 RPM,
after that you had better hold on for a real ride. I miss those days.

"dead until 2800" kinda of reminds me of the z/28 cam dad had in the camaro! since dad is gone now, and he didnt like that cam anyway i started this thread to try to find a better cam, something more driveable but something that sounds old school and has that exhaust note like the z/28. i thought the 097 might be the right one. i am keeping the engine looking the same as dad had it under the hood to keep the memories alive! M/T valve covers, and the L76 (365HP 327) intake. i have the old school over the counter 3310 yet too!
