Originally, the stamp pad was masked with a piece of tape when the engine was painted; the suffix was the only way the engine plant could identify the engine after paint. Just rub a little oil on it occasionally.
Most judging organizations will take a total deduction for a painted pad, as it's impossible to evaluate either the stampings or the pad surface.
