Anybody have any idea what temperature my car (68 RSZ/28)is running at when the guage is a at 1/4 up from the left...assuming that the guage is accurate? It climbs at lights but when cruizing at normal speeds it stays at about 1/4 guage. Just curious. I don't want to put aftermarket guages in this car as I like the clean look of the factory guages in the console.

1/4 from the left usually is 180 degrees, Half or center of gauge is 205 degrees, and 3/4 is 220-225. I am pretty sure because I have checked my car and others with my Raytek
temp gun and most read about what I stated above. Now the repo gauges for the center console tend to read lower, compaired to the oem stuff.

This will vary some, At 180 on my autometer gauge (been verified with a shop temp gun) the factory gauge is not quite half way between the 1/4 & 1/2 marks. At 210 it's the width of the needle past the 1/2 mark.

The condition of the sender, wiring and grounding as well as gauge calabration will effect the readings...

Thanks bunches. That sounds about right. I didn't think it was running as cold as it appeared but that sounds about right if it has a 180 thermostat. One of these days I will break those shiny chrome bolts loose on the thermo housing and check it out but I sure don't want to damage them until I need to.

Any idea if the guage vs Raytek gun is the same?
I allways assumed the gun would read surface temp which would be a little lower, maybe 10 degrees lower than a temp guage sender immersed in the cyl head with hot water flowing over it.
Any thoughts?

When I had mine tested the tech with the gun said he got a reading of 210 and that is what the gauge read. I just assumed it was fluid temp not the temp of surrounding metal. I never gave it any thought as to if it was surface or not.

When I worked with power distribution panals, rectifiers and copper buss bar the IR heat detectors we used displayed internal hot spots. Example: 2 copper plates were connected together with a 6" by 6" over lap and the contact surface was not flat and smooth the heat would be higher where the contact was poor and that was the reading we got. Not the surface temp.

This is interesting.

At 180 Deg, my factory gauge reads at 1/4 from the left. 200 Deg, about middle. I use the factory sender in the D.S. cylinder head, and my temp gauge with numbers on it is in the intake manifold.

I really would have thought there would be more varience with replacement senders and such.

With a 180 and using my Ratek ( what a great tool) my gauge reads 1/4.
