I got all our parts in from places like federal mogul etc and got the engine to the short block stage with bearings, pistons, rods, mains caps, crank, etc all installed. Happy to see that the crank turns smoothly with no restrictions too! But just out of my curiousity, i wanted to ask all u guys somethin. We have new forged alluminum pistons on our original rods and accidently switched the #5 rod and piston with the #7 rod and piston (every rod still has its correct rod cap with it)...and our engine guy said it didnt matter, and i dont secondguess him, but i just wanted to make sure with all u guys. thanks a ton!

did you get the rotating assembly balanced and/or the pistons fitted te certain bores? if so, then you should definitely put the proper pistons in the proper holes.
if not, then it won't matter.

all pistons are .030 over as all the cylinders are .030 over too. And yes we got the crank balanced.

Make sure the exhaust and the intake valve releifs are the same as some pistons are what they call left and rights and have smaller exhaust pockets then the intake pockets are some times bigger and deeper then the exhaust pockets.

Agree with Derrik. My machinist matched each piston to individual bores to get the exact clearance. My engine actually came out at closer to +.029.

bores are all .030 over and so are all of my pistons...so there is no worrying about that. thanks guys

Once upon a time when I was 15, I did an overhaul in the trunk a a 64 chevy. I short blocked the car's motor for my good buddy after school ,, didnt have a garage.. when it came time to put motor in and get it running,, It was turning over was a little tight? so we pulled car out to street and towed it to get it to turn over. upon releasing clutch,, rear wheels locked up and car went sideways in rear. Still little tight. So we pulled motor to check out. We found that #5 & 6 rod were in backwards , in other words, know those little rod cap tabs on each side that are supposed to go against crank radi? well they were hitting each other and finally locked. So thats my worry here,, From then on I started staying at Holiday Inns... Sleep tight. Maybe this should be in the Bench Racing Thread?

I put my old junk 301 together with it's pistons installed backwards on purpose b/c it changed the pin offset to a more favorable rod/crank angle by just a schosh, but at the expense of a little more piston slap/rattle until she warmed up!!

In other words, it helped her wrap up a bit better but my motor was a tad noisier when cold...

It's an OLD rodders trick if the pins are offset..
