I have a 68 RS that I am putting new Hedman Headers into. The exhaust pipes had begun to rust and had sizeable leaks in them and the headers were not in the best shape. I installed driver side headers that fit, but pretty tight. The header rests against the power sterring box and I'm not sure if that will create aproblem with the power steering. I guess if it goes out, I'll get something updated thats much smaller.
Anyway, the problem I have now is that the long tube headers are about 8 inches longer than what was removed and I'm not sure what to do. My goal is to put the headers on and drive to an exhaust shop and have them replace the pipes and mufflers with new stuff. I don't really want to drive this car in city traffic with open headers. My first option is to shorten the existing tubes and somehow ptach them to the header pipes (not permanently, but just rigged) to drive to the shop. Is there a way to shorten the header pipes and is this worth my time..or should I just put it on a trailer and drop it off at the muffler shop. I'm really hesitant to have this car towed, but it may be easier in the long run. I have standard equipment and no welding stuff.
Any suggestions?

Do you have AAA? If you do, they'll tow it for free and you can request a flatbed tow truck.

If not, get some of that flex-pipe from the auto parts store and temporarily attach it to your collectors and mufflers. You just need the proper size flex and flange adaptors to fit the collectors. You'll be all set to get to the shop.

Dimple the tube that is touching the steering box. It will cause a vibration in the steering and will transfer heat into the box. All you need is about .030" clearence to avoid any problems.

I drove mine to the muffler shop, it was a cool trip. :D I had an appointment and a written estimate in the car with me just in case I got stopped. Joe's suggestions are right on if you really don't want to drive uncorked!!
