I've converted my 68 to HEI but I don't have secondary ignition, as soon as you let off the ignition key, nothing. If I jump a hot wire off the pos. of the battery she runs. I've run all new wiring and checked it twice, still nothing.Maybe i'm missing something. Any objective veiws would help.

I'm not sure what you mean by secondary ignition. Is the problem that it will fire as you crank but stop when you release the key to run? Are you using the factory harness? Perhaps it still has the resistor wire between the firewall connector and the ignition. That will drop the voltage to around 9 volts or so which may not be enough to sustain the HEI. The other possibility is that the IGN fuse is blown. You'll need to see 12 volts on the line from the firewall connector when the key is in the run or crank position. Check it while disconnected from the coil.

Breaker point systems have two wires connected to the + side of the coil. One wire is the resistor wire I just mentioned that is connected to the IGN power circuit via the fuse block. The other wire is connected to the starter solenoid. This wire provided a full 12 volts to a breaker point coil when cranking. Then when you stop cranking the coil would run off the resistor wire. With HEI you won't need the wire from the starter to the coil.

What most folks do is butt splice a copper wire into the harness a few inches away from the firewall connector. Then run the new copper along side the old resistor wire. Install a femail bullet terminal on the end of both the new copper and old resistor wire. Then from the + side of the coil, make a short lead with a male bullet connector. If you're running HEI, plug the male into the copper wire to get a full 12 volts. If you ever run breaker points, you can move the bullet connector back to the resistor wire.
