Thermostats are cheap and easy to replace, so I would go ahead and replace it anyway. While you're there, the waterpump isn't hard to replace either. I used to drive an 87 Pathfinder, and they are very similar other than the Pathfinder was a 6cyl, so I had less space to work. You can troubleshoot the t-stat while installed just by checking the upper radiator hose while it's running. If the hose doesn't get hot, then the water isn't flowing like it should at normal operating temperature. If you pull the t-stat you can check in in a pot of boiling water on your stove, but at that point you might as well replace it since they only cost a few dollars. Hope this helps.
