i was replacing the balljoints and tie rods in a '70 Nova with no engine in it today and figured i'd post up a pic of how i compress a coil spring using a floor jack. i know this has been asked about a few times over the years, so i grabbed the camera and snapped off a quick (sideways) pic.
just wrap a chain around the frame rail and down around the front axle of the jack, put the saddle under the balljoint, and jack it up. the chain holds it all together and the car doesn't move. i even once did this on a bare subframe that was sitting on 4 jackstands.

on a side note- how much are those 2 piece rotors worth these days?

That is the way I did it on just my subframe. When you’re doing this on just the sub frame sitting a jack stands you can expect the subfame to dance around a little. I was a little more paranoid and used a larger chain and replaced the shock with a 5/8" all thread.
