I suggest the first item you buy is a Haynes manual for the car/model from the parts store.
The Owner's Manual tells you how to operate the car, the shop manual tells how the car operates.
Best $15 you ever spent.

Welcome from a fellow newbie to the site! I agree, getting the Haynes manual is a great way to get started. When I first had a Camaro, way back in the day, I bought one and refered to it constantly when working on anything in the car. I still have it today which will be a big help with my latest project.
