i just bought a 1984 camaro with the 305 vin number "h" engine in it. i am looking to make it perform better...look better...and sound better. so far i have replaced the master cylinder and the power brake booster(neither worked when i bought the car). i have also had a flowmaster series 80 with dual chrome pipes out the back. i am going to paint the car, redo the interior, add some z28 or iroc-z ground effects, and put a new carb and intake on it. it will take me about a year to do all of this but little by little i'll get there.

what i am wondering now is how do i clean up the engine compartment? i have hoses and wires going everywhere and it just looks like a mess in there. how do i make it look organized and good looking? i am open to any suggestion, idea, or advice.

thanks

it's mostly just a question of detailing... take it apart, clean it, paint it, fix it, rewire it, and put it back together. Here's a pic of my engine bay in 2001:

Here's one today:

Same car, same engine, lotsa hard work.....

i would take all the spark plug wires, and every few inches, have them snap into plasctic "guides". Msd sells these. This should take car of the SP wires. As for the rest i agree what jim said but if you dont feel like pulling the motor, i would take some dark black zip ties and tie all of the loose wiring together and out of the way. then i would take a few wire looms and all of the zip tied wires, i would put inside the looms so it would look as though you only have one single wire all nice and neat. Vin H is the 4bbl carb...LG4 i think. Anywho i have a 1982 Z-28 with the LG4 also, and my compartment looks a lot neater than what it did before. Well good luck

if you're looking to increase performance of the 305,might as well consider a 350.not trying to be a smart alec, just a far better motor.
in the mean time a new intake and carb as well as headers will help a lot.anything you bolt on the 305 will also go on a 350.
what i did was pick parts that would work well on a 350-383 then transferred them over when the 305 died.
nothing cleans up the engine compartment of these cars like removing the computer and harness(check emissions laws in your area first!)then get out the soap & water and start scrubbin!
oops!i see you are in california, never mind about the computer removal.
