I am in the middle of cleaning all the parts in prep for puting my engine back together when i get the block and crank back from the machine shop. I can't believe how grungy this stuff is! Anyway I wanted to know what the inspection criteria is for the stock roller lifters out of a 5.7 ltr 88 L98 engine. What all do I need to look for ie miking measurements, does the plunger inside the lifter come all the way out. Does somebody know a good referance online for this process?

ok, check the roller for being out of round. you can roll it on a clean flat surface with your hand pressing on the top of it and feel it jumping if the roller is'nt perfectly round. check the bearing in the roller. take the pushrod and pump the pushrod seat one good time to make sure there is a reasonable amount of tension. you dont have to soak them in oil overnight and pump the pushrod seat like the solid lifters. this can actually turn it into a solid lifter. hope this helps.

thank you. i totally disasembled them and clean them real good and put them back together.

if you are building a new engine, why not splurge for a new set of lifters? my Crane stock replacements were $160 for the set- but that was 3 years ago, so they probably went up a tad. plan on about $180 or so thru Summit or Jegs, or head to a Chev dealer and see what stockers go for.
