I took my steering column apart to change the turn signal switch. Now I cannot get the steering shaft all the way up to put the c clip back on. its missing by more than 1/4 inch. Any ideas? I've had enough head scratching for one night.

Is the bearing at the top of the column seated correctly?
I can't recall ever having a problem besides the bearing race at the top being out of place. I'll asssume your working with a locking column and are using a lock plate depressor tool.

Shaft is all the way up. I don't get it. I've spent about three hours now trying to figure it out. Getting tremendously frustrated. By the way, this is a 67, 4 speed car.

Locking Plate depressor tool?
Only needed on 69 and newer cars.

Now I'm confused as to what clip needs to be put back. It's been 30 years since I've done a column with out a lock plate but IIRC you pull the wheel then remove the switch. I don't recall ever doing a tilt column without a lock but can't imagine it much different.
