The body shop worker told me he should paint my 1998 camaro with regular base coat paint and it will look good. He said the mixed integrated paint with the clear coat and base coat will lose its shininess over time. Which one should I go with? The mixed integrated or regular paint job with no clear coat?

the "integrated" paint he is referring to is a single-stage. as far as fading over time if you use a good high quality product, prep the vehicle correctly,and follow the products mixing guidelines,it should not fade. If he just uses basecoat and does not clear it, the base will eventually deteriorate due to outside exposure. The clearcoat adds uv protection and also provides gloss. The best method to use is base coat clear coat which was what the car was painted from factory. i think you may have misunderstood what the shop was saying?

No i was talking about him doing it. Yeah he said he wanted to just do the base coat. So I called him and he said he will do the integrated mixed clear and regular paint. I know if I put the base coat and the clear coat on top of that it will peel over time. evidence is all the parts I got on my camaro that had that. my brother just got the mixed kind done and it looks awesome. also this guy has a lifetime warrenty as long as you keep the car. thank you so much for responding though.

My understanding is "integrated" means mixing the clear with the base color then applying it. You are still using paint designed as 2 stage though. The conventional thoughts are single stage and 2 stage. Single stage doesn't get a clear added to it or painted over it. 2 stage (most common today) is a base color coat then a clear coat is added.

2 stage is the most durable and makes repairs easier than a single stage or an integrated paint job.

yeah thank you but even the worker told me he dont like adding that clear coat on top because it peels over time. and he has been in business for 34 years it is i believe. i cant wait. my car is the coat of many colors right now

well i have been doing this for a long time and that is the dumbest thing i have ever heard!!! but hey it is your car do whatever you want!!

Find a new shop. If it peels he does not know what he is doing. ALL new cars are painted with base then clear over that.

I painted my 69 in 1984 with PPG Deltron base/clear and it still looks great. If you are using a non metallic or pearl paint the single PPG is great and no need to use a clear coat. Mixing clear and base is BS, the paint companies spend a lot of research to determine the product that will be competitve and give good lasting results. Just because someone has been doing something for 30 years does not mean it is quality work.

Curious as to what colour you car is? Red, single application used to fade the quickest of the spectrum...not sure if this is still the case.

Also curious if you would be charged same price as the b/cc?

As explained, it's your ride, but paint has come along ways since the use of the single coat.

When 'base / clear' paint was first being used (probably for 10 yrs or so in the 80's mostly), there were a number of issues associated with 'peeling clear coats', but I haven't heard of these issues in awhile. There has been continuous evolution of paints and paint technology, some of which has been driven by government rules, and others by 'technology' and chemistry. Like today, when 'water borne' paints are predominantly used by the manufacturers, but that doesn't mean all you 'home painters' should begin using 'water borne' paints. There is nothing wrong with single stage paints, in fact, I prefer them for non metallic colors on older cars, as it can be made to appear more like the original lacquer paints (but much more durable).
