How about a 275 with a 9" wheel? Can I get away with 5.00 backspacing?
Believe it or not the custom wheel companies suggest 5 and 3/8". If that's not available 5.25" or if the only option is 5 or 5.5 go with the 5.5. It's better to error on the inside than the outside.

275/40R17 or 275/50R17? I run the 275/50R17 on an 8" rim with 5" back spacing and it fits with lots of clearance. I plan to run 325/50R17s on either 9" or 9.5" rims when these wear out. This is on a 67 Firebird with a Moser 9".

i run the 275/40. are you sure you want a tire that's almost 30 inches tall? that's huge! you'll need a very low rear gear, too. you must be tubbed, right?

Back again.

I daily drove my car w/ old style, L-60/14's on 9" Fenton slotted mag's w/ 3.5" b/s!!

They are still mounted and up on my top shelf in my garage!!

They measure a modern 298/53-14 so go from there!!

I had to run coil-overs to raise her like 4" to 4.5"s to keep from cutting my tire roll/corners!!

I figure that a 17" x 26.5" tall tire w/ a 12" section width on a 10" rim w/ a 5.25" b/s will fit fine !!!

And I'm going to find a pair of real slicks that size too.

Stock tubs and with over 500 ft-lbs @3800 rpm at the rear wheels I've actually had to reduce my gearing from 3.70 to 3.50s to try to hook the torque. Especially when I hit the nitrous and the torque jumps to nearly 700 rwtq. Both the 275/50R17s and 325/50R17s are 28" tall. About perfect for my car. Taller tires hook a bit better than shorter tires and since we're still talking a 50 series 17" DR tire my handling has not suffered at all. I had 25.5" 265/40R17s on before and they hooked rather poorly. ;)

Sporter can you also post your front tire/rim specs?

Thanks!
