I am looking to buy a 69 camaro that has the Z-28 markings however I'm not sure if it is real. The info I have, VIN = 124379N513678, interior color is red on cloth??? (these don't seem to be the orginial seats). 2 spoke stearing wheel. 4sp (not sure if it is a muncie yet or not). Wood grain, tack in dash and reads only to 6000rpm red-line (saw on Car & Driver stock 302 red-lined at 7500rpm). Speedo to 120mph.
It does have 4disc brakes with "disc brakes" on the brake pedel.
Does NOT have a cowl hood, does this mean its not a Z or what?
I will get more #s after Monday...
Thanks in advance,
Jeff

A car without factory documentation presented as a genuine SS or Z/28 has to be carefully examined by a knowlegeable person. Even at that it is possible to create a very convincing clone.

This car (N513678) was built during September 1968, prior to the use of X codes on the body tag. Thus even the body tag info isn't very useful. At that time the special ducted hood and 4 wheel disc brakes were not available. The ducted hood was never standard on the Z/28; most did not have it. The optional Z/28 tach prior to around Feb 1969 was 6000 red line 7000 rpm. Probably all had the 120 mph speedo.

Everyone will tell you to look for power front dics brakes, 12 bolt rear axle with multi-leaf springs and dual exhaust. All standard/required on Z/28 but also on SS and optional on non-performance Camaros.

If the car in question isn't extremely original with number-matching DZ 302 engine or has paperwork there is no way to know for sure.

The very best way is to go out and buy the book "The Definitive 1969 camaro z28-ss 396 Fact Book" by Jerry McNeish this book has more info in it than you are going to want to know you can get it threw classic industries or mybe even a local book store

While it is true most Z/28s used the 4-leaf rear spring it is not unique to the Z/28. The 8-72 rev of the P & A manual shows the "BM" code rear spring #3934894 to be used on any coupe with F41. Documented non-Z/28 4-leaf cars have been found.

By now few cars have OE rear springs. There is a very good 4 leaf repro available.
