Hi All fellow Camaro people,
My name is James and I have been slowly restoring a 1968 Camaro Coupe from the ground up for the last few years. First and foremost, I have posted on this site once before, under the welcome wagon section. As I have been a member of this site now for quite some time(became a gold member recently), I thought I would contribute a little back to what I believe is a fantastic place to visit and learn. You guys have great knowledge and some amazing skills. I am amazed at times at the workmanship and ideas that you all come up with. This has helped me tremendously at times when I have been at the crossroads. So here I am again, this time it will have to be the build project section, for obvious reasons. Just a quick recap, I bought my Camaro from Iowa in 2007, it took a while to get here, but arrived in January of 2008. By mid year it was stripped, bagged and labelled, as per normal proceedings, and then suddenly it is 2014 and she is still a shell. Saying that, I have a family, busy job and also rebuilt, renovated half of our house, inside and out. Throw in a trip to your beautiful country, regular maintenance around the house, fixing other peoples stuff and trying to stay connected to family and freinds, well, you get the idea. Here is the achieved list for my car. New floor, new dashboard top, new passenger toe panel, repair tulip panels, cut out and weld in a new trunk floor, remove the roof and remove the passenger 1/4 and outer wheel housing. Just refitted a new outer wheel housing today. I am writing this as the epoxy dries. Next job, 1/4 goes on (amd) and then the same for the driver side. I am keeping my Camaro left hand drive, as it is legal here if the vehicle is more than 30 years old.Please do not ask me the logic here regarding this law, as I just do not know! I will add pics as I go, not necessarily in order, but pics none the less. So thanks guys for your help over the years, and I hope I can help someone also.The first few pics are what I received from the guys in Iowa.

Here's some bad stuff that I found.I forgot to mention in my first post that I also removed both door skins and fitted new skins to each. As the pics show, rust in the usual places. The dash top had been repaired by myself, but I was not happy with the result, so a new top was fitted. Underneath the dash was rust along the channel, all ground, repaired then treated. I coat everything with KBS that will not be weld affected. In some instances, I will epoxy coat bare metal, then KBS over that. It seems to stick to the primer better than to bare metal, even after treating as per instructions, ie aqua clean, rust blast and then coat. The exception to that is if I sandblast first, then I clean with metal prep wash and coat.The front guard extensions both had rust hole, a quick and easy fix.The rear deck panel is my biggest concern, a rust hole that I have now patched, but it has surface rust inside that I cannot get to. I am thinking of a gun barrel wire brush, on an extension and then into a drill.With the passenger quarter off at the moment, I can alsmost get in there, then I will spray with rust converter. Overall I am happy with what I have found, I could have kept the floor and trunk and just patched, but I would prefer to have fresh new metal in there. cheers

We have lots of this stuff going on down here, we are as crazy about muscle cars and all things auto as you guys are. In my neighbourhood I often see mustangs, challengers, corvettes and even a very nice thunderbird floating around. This is of course in addition to our own monaro's, gtho's, toranas and chargers that are let out on sunny days. We have tons of swap meets, car shows and races also. cheers

Trunk restoration part 3. I would like some thoughts, if possible, on my approach to this type of repair. My logic was this:

1: The replacement panel was for a 67. I could not find a 68 anywhere. I wanted to retain the curve on the driver side, next to the inner wheel housing, hence the weird cutting.

2:I wanted to retain as much original metal as possible.

3:I wanted to be within easy access to the other side of the panel, for easier dressing. I know that I could have cut along the frame rails, and only had one side to dress, but I wanted to clean up both sides. I also could have replaced the whole trunk pan, but the rest of the trunk is in great condition.

This was a lot of work, but I think it was worth it. I had a few small issues at the angle leading up to the rear seat, but a little bit of metal/fibreglass filler smoothed that out. probably 1/2 a cup, if that, at most. I am happy with the result. It took me about 4 weekends, on and off, to complete. once I spray over with trunk splatter , it may even look better than new. My new project now is the 1/4 panels and outer wheel housings. passenger outer wheel housing is done, just playing with the 1/4 for now. Pics to come.

As a side note, my wife, two daughters and myself took a holiday in your neck of the woods in September and October last year. This is what I hired for a couple of days while in L.A. This was taken on the road back from Malibu. Love your country and we had a great time.Now that G.M Holden is closing shop over here, There is talk ( I think it's called a rumour) that we may get the Camaro. Ford are also in the process of winding up, and we ARE getting the new Mustang in 2016. It only stands to reason that we get the Camaro as well, don't you think!

You are approaching your trunk pan repair identical to what I did on my 67. Nice work.
Like you, I wanted to keep as much original metal as possible. Your floor rust is similar to mine also. I welded in a patch panel for that portion of the floor pan.
Good luck with your project. I'll be following your progress.

Just to add to the above post in regards to holidaying with my family in your great country, I bumped into this guy when at the Stax museum in Memphis. I have already submitted this in a Camaro tech forum, but thought I would share it here also. Obviously got the picture, also got an autograph and a cool sketch of a 68 Camaro. Will be framed and placed in the Camaro cave. Add to this, one really cool guy.

Hi all,
I mentioned in an earlier post that I wanted to clean under my rear deck filler panel, but was finding it a bit tricky to clean up in there. I thought what the hell, pop it up, clean, prep and paint, and then weld it back. Fixed a couple of welds, will finish it all up on Saturday and then I will weld it back:Will post up the finished product. I have included a pic. of the weld through primer that I use. You can see it in my trunk floor repair pics. This product works great (I don't sell it, I get it from my local auto paint guy). I have used a couple of zinc based products and have found, for me at least, that this stuff works the best.
