Hi:waving:....I recently received my L-79 grind and have one, no, make that two questions.....The cam is going in my 67 327 which is built to L-79 specs....Regarding the valve lash adjustment, is it safe to turn down the rocker nuts 1 full turn after 0 lash seeing as though this grind is just a factory high performance replacement?.....And, regarding the initial ignition timing, is it safe to adjust this to factory L-79 engine specs?, I believe it's something like 12 degrees BTDC but I'll have to look that up to confirm.

1/4 turn preload with a chevy lifter and she should rpm to 7k.:yes:
If you preload to one turn and loft off the nose of the cam..the lifter will take up the clearance and hold the valve off its seat.
As for the timing..give it what its wants with todays pump swill.

I'm going to follow this since I've got a set of double humps rebuilt and I'm thinking about doing an "old school" build with one of the old factory spec cams.

one turn past zero lash? are you going to run hydraulic lifters with this cam? wasn't the L79 a solid lifter motor?

I used to time mine by turning my dizzy up until it kicked back on the starter and then I'd back her off a schosh!

And I'd set my points w/ a worn silver dime! Sucker would run like a "scalded-dog"!!

My bass playing Buddy couldn't figure out how I tuned them by ear until I asked him how he tuned his bass guitar, then he woke up!!

he, He!!

And I lashed them hot running at an idle the old "feelie" way... Hy-cam p/r's spun between my thumb and index finger until it got snugged up, then a 1/4 to a 1/2 more on the nut.

Solid lifter, I'd just insert my needed two feeler gauges and let her idle away, in and out, while setting the nut!

NO!:noway:....The L-79, 327-350, was equipped with a factory performance hydraulic cam....You may be thinking of the higher horsepower rated 327-365 which had a solid lifter cam!:yes:

OK, I contacted the cam maker (melling) and received a quick response!.....The valves are adjusted 3/4 to 1 turn down and the ignition timing is adjusted to factory specs and that would be 10 degrees BTDC for a 1967 327 L-79.

The one turn after zero lash is only for factory Chevy Cams sold by Chevrolet parts counters. Ron you did right talking to the cam manufacture, Comp hyd cams are typically 1/2 turn and as you found out Mellings are different...

Ah.... guess I need to do a little light reading to refresh my memory. i've got the older printing of the "how to hot rod small blocks" book and motors manual that my FIL gave me... I was thinking of using the LT1 cam (-178 was it??) in my 350 but I think I'll take a closer look at the L79 cam.

Ah.... guess I need to do a little light reading to refresh my memory. i've got the older printing of the "how to hot rod small blocks" book and motors manual that my FIL gave me... I was thinking of using the LT1 cam (-178 was it??) in my 350 but I think I'll take a closer look at the L79 cam.
You know, another suggestion for your 350 would be the factory high performance L-82 hydraulic cam.....My brother used to have a 78 "Silver Anniversery" Corvette which was equipped with the L-82 350 engine.....That car had a killer idle for being a stock cam!.....This is what inspired me in getting a factory high performance grind!:yes::thumbsup:
