I want to put headers on my 69 camaro which has a 350 but I need additional information.

What is the difference between longtube and shorty headers? Which will give me more horsepower and how will they affect the sound of the exhaust?

I've noticed that some headers have skinny tubes while others have thicker tubes. Why is that?

I appreciate your help!

It depends on your engine configuration and intended use. What HP is your 350 and how is it built, what about the rest of your drive line? Are you driving only on the street or will you be a regular at the track. There are quite a few posts on this subject already if you search.
I can tell you from personal experience that shorty headers will probably not work well unless they have a rear dump like the stock manifolds and the ones I tried and have seen are center dump.

I have a 350 with a 400 tranny pretty much stock. I'd say it's pushin about 300 hp. It's a street car

I would run Hooker Super competition long tube headers with 1 5/8" primaries going into a 2 1/2" dual exhaust. That will give you some decent power gains with good torque thru out the rpm range.

I like Thorley tri-Y's and have had them on a my '69 with a 400+ HP 350 with a Muncie and now on my '68 with a 300 HP or so 327 and TH350. They fit great on both and are fairly heavy gauge tube so should last. From what I have seen and read they make more torque at lower RPM and the tri-Y design helps the flow. JMHO :yes:

Shorty headers usually have the collectors at the center of the engine. This is NOT a good place on a first generation Camaro ! The steering box is there !

If you go with Hooker Headers Long tube, get the competition series. Not the Super Comps. The Super comps are larger tube anyway, which you will not want.

Do you know what frame stands you have ? The 302/350 stands the Hooker Competition Headers fit well. The 307/327 stands the Dynomax or Summit brand fit better.

I have heard good reports on the Thorley Tri-y's as fitting either type of frame stand.

I don't know what frame stands I have. How do I find out? What do they look like? I appreciate your help

Here are some pictures of the two possible frame stands and engine mounts.

1969 327 frame stand = approx. 2 5/8" wide.



1969 350 frame stand = approx 2 3/8" wide.



1969 327 (short and wide) Engine mount = approx. 2 5/8" wide



1969 350 (tall and narrow) Engine mount = approx. 2 3/8" wide.
