I just removed my subframe (69 Convertible) and completely disassembled it. I have never replaced the lower ball joint and these seem to be welded in is that the way they came and is there a special technique to make removing them a little easier.
I've read here of people running into welded in ball joints. They seem to work allright.
You can buy circle track weld in ball joint seats for a fix or there are repro lower arms available.
If it's just a driver and not a road racer, the tack weld thing should work.
I'd keep an eye on them though.
