Well I have had this engine for several months. California got its first winter rain yesterday so I since I had all the parts, I decided to tear the motor down and install the cam, lifters and timing gear. I painted the engine and installed the new oil pan as well.

The pistons had a decent build up of carbon but the cylinders looked pretty darn good. First time seeing the guts of a Gen III motor. For instance, I did not know the 5.3 was a 6 bolt main. Also, had a very tough time removing the harmonic balancer. What a PITA. I had to rent a Chrysler pulley to remove it. Damn thing has no holes like a "normal " SBC.

Anyway, heads are off to the machine shop for a valve job.

Its an LQ4, 5.3 motor off a Suburban. The front rotating assembly (alternator/PS Pump) was converted so it can accept the LS1 intake manifold.

Sorry, my point was that an LQ4 is a 6.0L engine, not a 5.3L. I was curious which one you have. If it's iron block and a 5.3L it's probably an LM7?

Hmm, I thought LQ motors were out of trucks so that is why I said LQ4. I am still learning these motors. It is an iron block 5.3 out of a 02 Suburban.

Just curious then...what is difference between LQ 4 and LQ9?
Compression on the LQ9 is 10.08:1. The only differences between the 4 and 9 are beefier rods and flat top pistons in the LQ9. The rods debuted in the 02 LQ9 are the same as LS2 rods. In 05 all lq4s and lq9s received the same internals sans pistons.

Anytime.

All 5.3s came with automatic trannys.

I'm in the process of putting an LQ9 in a 69 right now. Some people refer to LQ9s and iron block LS2s

Thanks John,

I got it mated to a 4l60E. I will certainly be in touch as this build progresses. I want to keep driving the 69 as long as a I can so I want to have everything before I pull my motor.

Hope to see you in Vegas soon. Will be there for New Years so if you can get away for a cocktail, that would be great.

So what accessory drive are you running with that truck balancer?
Nice project by the way. I'm converting an LY6 6.0 myself.

thats awesome man. I have a customer car that recently went on a 2500 mile road trip with a 5.3 and a turbo, making around 800, got 23mpg all the way to florida and back. New tech in old metal is the only way to go.
