Hey all - Anyone doing LT swaps yet? I love the LS/T56 in my 68. Truth be told I recently picked up a 79 Z28 with NOM and am going to swap it. I was originally thinking LS3/6L80E but have been doing some research into LT1/8L90E. I know that in either case the trans might be a bit of a stretch from a ground clearance stand point but will use a T56 Magnum or 4LXX as a fall back. Comments on the auto trans welcome as well but on to the real question......

For anyone that has done the LT swap so far what are the significant differences that may pose roadblocks compared to the LS swap. Keep in mind the is a 79 and not a first gen but looking for the general watch outs.

I was considering it but there are just too few options whereas the LS swap has tons of options for everything. Decided to go LS1.

LT1 stock will have less power then a LS3/480 crate motor and will cost substantially more to swap. LT1 is electric steering. The front drive options are limited and expensive compared to LS. The GMPP control system cost almost $2500 compared to about $1200 for LS and the list goes on.

As above not quite enough aftermarket support yet.

Get ready for some floor mods. Trans pan hangs low. It can be done though. Guy posted a good thread on LS1tech.com

Thanks All. Ok, on to LS questions. The plan for the 79 in to be more of a "daily driver" type vehicle to enjoy. By that, coming from a guy in the Chicago area, I mean I want to be able to comfortably drive this car to work any day from spring to fall. This is one of the reasons for the automatic instead of manual.


My 68 has the LS376/480/T56 Magnum with a hydraulic Clutch. The 13 has the LS3/TR6060. Both of these cars are easy to drive but the manuals could get old if driven in rush hour on a regular basis. The drivability of the 480 isn't that much different than the LS3 to me. There is a difference but seems minor. Since I will be driving to work, AC will be a must and I will probably go with CAT's to avoid the emissions smell that comes along with the 480 sometime.


The price difference between the LS3, LS3/480, or LS3 525 aren't a show stopper for me it is more about getting the drivability I'm looking for.

The 480 is rated at 495. The extra cost to the 525 imho isn’t worth it but I do it anyway.

The 525 works great with a manual. Going auto will need to put a lot of though into the TC to achieve the driveabity you desire.

Member Jeff (workn24/7) has a 430 crate with a close ratio magnum in his 69. I have driven a few LS swaps and man I will tell you that that setup would be an awesome daily driver setup. Have you looked at GMs new 4L75e trans? That thing is a beast if you want to keep a 4 speed OD. I switched over to the Holley mount setup (headers, mounts, crossmember) and it solved all of my fitment/driveline angle issues compared to my old setup from 2010.

As for the LT swap, it reminds me of the LS swaps in the early 2000s. In 02 I was at a crossroads on whether to put an gen 2 LT or LS1 in my car. I ended up doing the LT and drive it for almost 9 years before I put my current LS3 in. I liked the LT but in the end always wanted an LS. I think the same is to be said for the new Gen V LT stuff. Great power and Holley is a great place to start for conversion swap parts. I know late last year they were getting ready to release swap mounts and such. I have been eyeing a 68 C10 that is for sale and the L83/86 with 6L trans would be an awesome setup for it. If I were looking nowadays (and I kind of am lol) I wouldn’t think twice and look at the LT stuff. I know Speartech has a great harness and put a Holley Mid Mount accy on the front and go from there.

I just did the GMPP LS3 495 with Magnum T56. I used the Holley/Hooker motor mounts, crossmember, oil pan, headers. Everything fit perfectly without massaging anything, including the headers. Great ground clearance too. The ceramic coating on the headers sucked though...

I'm going with a 4L60E for my conversion. Main reason is no tunnel modifications.
I was able to install a 4L80e with no tunnel mods in a 68 Camaro.

The 4L60e is not as strong but it does have a better OD gear.

I found the 4L80e rebuilt out of a 2004 Silverado for $650.

The electronic controller cost more than the trans. You can get a 2400 stall converter (stock) for $250.

Well, the adventure begins. I ended up going Gen V LT4/8L90E. The process of mocking up will be starting shortly.

How did the swap go? I'm considering a Gen V swap as well - what things should I consider? It seems like I can buy a drop out LT1 from 2015-2019 camaro motor with all accessories for the same price as some of the L99's.

The LT1 makes considerably more power than an ls3(especially in lower rpms)--it makes 500 out of the box with headers.

So you are saying the LT1 crate engine that is rated at 460HP makes considerably more power than the LS3480 which makes 495HP because you put headers on it? Both engines are rated under the same conditions from GM. Most people are putting headers on either one. Seems like some misinformation here.

The ls480 is 480 horse.
The LT makes more power everywhere in comparison...look at the dyno graph.
