I have a Mallory Hyfire, Promaster Coil, and Unilite Distributor. Which method is prefered for this type of setup? Use the Malloy ballast resistor and hack up my new FF engine harness? Or connect it to the harness using the white cloth resistance wire. If anyone uses this type of Mallory ignition system; let me know what works.

Why not try the Mallory instructions? Go to the Mr. Gasket site ( www.mrgasket.com ), click on the Mallory logo at the bottom, and all of their instruction sheets/wiring diagrams are there to download.

First, measure the resistance of the ballast resistor and then compare that to the resistance of the wire. If they are about the same, either will work. But I think if you read the directions, the Mallory unit needs 12V for the ignitor and ballast power to the coil. If I'm right about that then you're going to need a 12 volt feed anyway. One nice thing about a Ballast resistor is that the heat is localized in one place instead of through the wiring harness.
