I think this tranny is out of a 69 396 Chevelle. Right now we're running it in a 69 T/A. could someone decode this for me? I was wondering what the heck it is;
Tail Housing
3857584G
Side of Box (Pass)
392660
?
US Patent No
3098336
GM...........
12

Stamped on stamp pad
P917A

If the #'s appear to be wrong, they prob are. the tranny was in the car and is (as you all know) a bit dificult to read upside down. the tranny was prob put in about when i was born. Also, does anyone know of a Firebird Site like this?
thanks a lot

Im no expert but here it goes and if im wrong please correct me so i can learn.
P= muncie
9=1969
17=day of build
A=month of build or A=wide ratio M20

and from the side cover and tail housing numbers it could be anything from a M20 to a M22.What does the G mean after the tail housing number.

The "A" from the date code is for a Muncie M20.

I posted this last night and was very tired from working all weekend (weird isnt it?) anyway, i just realized the number stamped on the tranny vertically was missing a digit. the corret # is P9C17A if it makes any difference. (i didnt have the "c" in there before)
thanks again

You got it.
C = March

There is also a VIN stamped on it also. More than likely your friend is right - 69 Chevelle.
