I have recently been GIVEN a muncie tranny. I called my Chevy dealer about the numbers and he said he couldn't tell me what it is. Anyone out there know their trannies?

Here's the numbers:
tail housing 3846429
left cover plate 3831707
body 3925660
stamped on body P8D26
18W336301
Is this M22, M21 or just an M? Thanks in advance.

Lou:

Post this on the Chevelle site under "Tag Team" and you'll most likely find out what you need to know.

I can tell ya here!
It is a 1968 tranny, but it would depend on how many rings are on the input shaft to whether it is an M20, M21, or M22.

W-Willow Run assembly plant...not sure what was built here in '68, maybe Novas.
336031-VIN from the car it came from.

Rings on the input shaft indicate what the transmission is...
No rings- Possibly an M22 if the gearset is original. M22's will also have a drainplug in the case.
1 ring-M21 close ratio
2 rings-M20 wide ratio

Thanks Dave. Will check the input shaft for rings. Regardless of it is, I think I got a hell of a deal for free. I swear the guy told me it's out of a GTO. Oh well, still GM. Thanks again!
