Discussion Starter #1
I have a '97 30th Anniversary that refuses to start. I have checked the battery it read 12.6 (normal) at the store. I checked the starter and it checked out good as well. Ive bought a Haynes book and followed everything i could find from break engaged (automatic) to neutral start the thing wont go. It doesnt crank over when I turn the key. All the lights turn on the radio turns on but when I turn to start nothing happens. I can hear a faint click near the radio and the guy at advance auto said it might be the ignition switch if that helps. PLEASE HELP ME GET BACK TO CRUISING IN MY BLACK BEAUTY!!!!!!!!!

It may be your starter even if it checked out ok at autozone. My wifes 2000 nissan wouldn't start sometimes and it didn't make any noise like you said yours was doing....except for a faint humm or something....but if I hit the starter a few good times with a 3/8 breaker bar it started up eventually. Try that and see if that works. If it does, you need a new starter....I put a new one on her car and it's been good ever since. Even though Autozone says your starter "circuit" is good, doesn't mean the starter is actually good I've found. Good Luck!!!

You may have with the following:
1. VATS/Security - use the key and go to START position. No crank, then turn ign sw OFF/LOCKed, then pull out the key. Wait min 3 minutes, then attempt to start with the same key.
If engine starts, need a new tumbler or bypass resistor across the two white wires equalling the key chip resistance.
2. Start relay may be burnt - needs replacement.

The clicking may be an accessory powered relay not powered in START position.

A final test of the starter, and as suggested, place a screwdriver, or safer, a remote starter button, across battery positive stud and the S terminal of the solenoid. Key to IGN, then press remote starter button and starter should crank, engine should start, if there is distributor reference pulses going to VATS module and then VATS is satisfied and passes a hand shake to ECM letting the injectors work and engine starts.

If the above happens, you might add a remote start button to the inside.

If you do not have a chip Im guessing yours is an automatic. If so check the ignition switch on the top side of the steering column. I have seen this happen before and cause the same issue as what you are discribing. If you havent already gotten it fixed by now.
