My daughters 67 RS Project

87240 Views 961 Replies 81 Participants Last post by  Sosh67
Well, my 19 year old daughter has been looking for a 67 Camaro project for us to do together and she finally found one.

It has solid bones but is going to need floors, quarters and outer rockers.

I made her restore a family vehicle earlier this year to get experience. So, she replaced rockers, primed and painted an 04 Jeep.

So, she has been hunting eBay and craigslist for a car and she found one last week.

67 RS with 2L option. It also has A/C and is marina blue with bright blue deluxe interior.

It came with a M20, 327 4bbl and 12 bolt rear end.

Not the original drivetrain but perfect for this car.

My wife bought me my own rotisserie so I don’t have to borrow one for this project.

Kick panels should be the carpet/dash color/console colors. What’s the interior code?
This was originally bright blue deluxe interior and will be when complete. So, speaker cover colors match the dash? Great! What about the rear speaker covers? Same thing?

The speaker cover is already part of the dash isn’t it? I can’t say for certain about the rears, but the reproduction ones I got are a silver/bare steel color. Try here

I think I can contribute and add my experience here.

I had a original blue interior that I changed black. My original kick panels were blue.

I have painted my kick panels. I think I really cared about the plastic prep and did things correctly. I used the right primer and only on very well degreased clean surface.

Now the paint is moving away at the contact with the door panel. This is on both DS and PS doors.

The door panel is sticking on the plastic kick off paned part , on that edge.

WIth the previous door panels there was also a contact at that place.

Now that I know this, with painted panels, I would check fitment first and reshape the door panel so that the contact is not present.
Don't know if I am the only one here to have this problem...

I appreciate the information. I am only dying the kick panels and a few vinyl components. The rest are bright blue.

Clean well, use adpro (adhesio9n promotor) and then apply the color. I never had a failure and I've changed colors on many vehicles. Factory interior colors did not match one another exactly. Kicks were injected color molded vs any painted surface. I owned a bright blue 67 gut and that's the way it was. I do not know who you are using for an interior vinyl product source.

Thanks. I used the adpro and applied the dye. The kick panels look quite good now. I will add pics tonight for this, the steering column rebuild and the electrical RS motor rebuild.
Dye versus paint?
Dye need to be cured? Maybe it will last better again friction...
Mines were just painted.
SEM Trim black in aerosol. I did respect the surface preps as Sauron explained.
Here are some pics of the dyed parts.

What product and company did you use for the color?
Here are some pics for the steering column assembly.

I found it easier to route the harness through the painted column parts before sliding them onto column.

Make sure the metal horn bracket ring is on very very loose so it can be twisted into position. I’ll add a few pics of that.

Third pic shows the bracket secured to back of turn signal housing. Bracket has a guide that goes into an L shaped cutout of column shaft.

Push down, you will know when guide goes in as assembly will drop down a few inches. Then turn counter clockwise.

After that, tighten down the 3 screws in the turn signal assembly. I’ll add more later.

SEM flexible coatings
More pic of column assembly. Note the 2 harness retainer brackets and the c clip to retain the steering shaft. I just used a long socket to push the c-clip down the shaft till it snapped into the shaft groove.

Remember to put the washers over the top bearing first.

So, we had an issue with the hood. We brought it out to buff and after 3 weeks in the house it looked like crap.

I think either Katie forgot to mix hardener in or the trick we used to clean up a mistake soaked into the existing paint.

I was worried about the number of coats we had added so Katie and I stripped it down to primer and started over.

Anyway, here is the finished product. Superior in every way to what we had applied previously.

I kept the gun about 4 inches from the surface and overlapped by about 80%. Doing so eliminates the need to cross hatch or feather.

I also slowed down a hair to ensure a wet coat. This consistency was needed on a big surface like the hood.

Here are the last of the parts needing to be sealed and painted.

note that the kick panel speaker covers are notched. I think this was done to leave room for the parking brake pedal travel.

I know the park brake was partially dipped. I’m thinking of applying a coating that will create a metal oxide layer. Then spray the lower portion with sealer.

What’s the consensus on the rear speaker grills? Interior color painted?

Actually the dash top was zero gloss, suede texture. Gloss levels fall into ranges. Matte being less glossy than satin.
I could not find the post but do you gave a 68 ashtray instead of a 67?
That is one of the best painted hoods I have ever seen. Very nice work! I need my car painted LeMans Blue. Is she up for it?

I just kept adding flattener until the egg shell disappeared. The ratio using the PPG product was about 1 part color to 1.6 part flattener.

The DX 685 data sheet called for 1:1 to get Flat but that produced an eggshell result.

1.6 to one provided flat results. I tried buying the PPG additive for the suede texture but it was discontinued.

So, the top of the dash And the speaker covers get FLAT color corresponding to the interior code of the car.
