While at dinner last night I overheard a conversation that the older guy at the next table was having on his cell phone. He was talking about cleaning out his garage and getting rid on his stash of camaro parts. After he hung up I asked what he had. Engines, spoilers, carbs, fans, starters ...the list went on. I asked to look at what he had. LOTS OF PARTS! THere was a complete engine on a stand covered in a towell pushed into the far corner of his VERY packed garage. After I dug thur old trim rings, brake drums. spark plug wires ETC, I found a small block engine. This is where the mystery begins.

Casting number 3970010 BUT with a casting date of G768. The stamping pad where the vin and ID number is located is small, only about 2 inches VS the full width of the block. The ID is T817TB. Alternator is on Right side( pass ). I pulled the valve cover. casting number is 482624 with casting date of H88. The casting mark on the front was a mystery too. Heads had the three holes for mounting alt etc but had a 45 degree triangle on the front ( no camel back or other casting mark I was used to seeing). Engine has an aftermarked intake but a q-jet that the guy had no memory of where he got it. numbers on that q-jet are 7059253.

:confused: WHAT IS IT.

"TB" = 1956, 155hp/265, P/G trans, 2-barrel, 3100 truck. Heads are probably -041's..

It appear's that you found a real old "mutt" put-together engine!

Like my old junk301 w/ the SJ 327 block and '55, 265 and unknown 283 and '67, 350SS engine parts it was made out of..

Check the numbers again, it looks like a block for use in a 79 truck. The 3970010 block statred in 69. G768 is more than likely July 16 1978 and T817TB is Tonawanda August 17 T=truck B? Head number might be 462624=79-85 350 1.94. H88= August 8 1978

But when did they go to, or from, the small stamping pad to the one full width of the head. The area where vin and id numbers are stamped. For sure the stamp is two letters TB. into 1970 they stamped three letter suffix. mystery still.

Everett#2390 is right. I did the same thing. I ran the numbers and came up with the same conclusion. These are the possibilities on the engines casting number:
Cast# CID Year Bolt Main Type of Vehicle
3970010....302.....69........4...............Z-28 Camaro
3970010....327.....69........2...............Trucks and industrial
3970010....350.....69-80...2 or 4.........No information provided

As for when they changed the stamping pad...I'm not sure. I'll see what I can find...if I can! lol

Ok...I don't know if this will help at all or not. However, read this page and see if any of this material sounds familar. Ok? Go to this link: http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Downs/3000/matchnos.html#Engine Block
Scroll down to Mysterious CE block and see if anything is similar on your block. I don't know if it helps at all....but I guess it could never hurt to take a peak at it. lol
