I am still trying to figurre out what to repower with. I have a worn out 396...I was thinking 502, but boy it is a lot of money. Anyway A totally rebuilt 427 is availible to me......I know nothing about a 427. Can I use the flywheel off a 396? or is it like the 454? How about the longevity of a 427? Is the motor about the same as my 396? I think its the same stroke but a different bore? Sorry to sound ignorant, but dont want to buy a motor that I will be unhappy with. Joe

Bore=4.25" (same as 454)
Stroke=3.76 (same as 396)
Internally balanced (like 396)
A good engine in my opinion. Often overlooked. A 454 will generally make more low end torque, but this is a Camaro not a tow truck. The L-88 Corvette version was no slouch and let's not forget the ZL-1. 425HP @ 5600 and 460TQ @ 4000. I knew a guy that ran one in a '61 chevy back in the '70's with 4.88's and a powerglide that ran 11's with street tires. I think he shifted at 7500.

Take out 396 and put in the 427. I have a 427 camaro. I have about 7000 miles on it and it is great. Let the motor rev and drive. Got 12 miles the gallon with a 355 gear in car now. 400 + HP dual quads. 4 speed.
Just got back from a 350 mile trip tonight. No difference from 396 engine swap. The only thing very close is if you put the L88 front dampner and use a 1 1/8 sway bar in front.
