Hey everyone,
After going through a crane unit and a pertronix electronic ignition unit, I have decided to upgrade to an HEI on my 68. The questions I have are this:

1. Do I need new spark plug wires when going HEI from points?

2. I have seen some posts about one of the wires I need being a resistor or ballast wire and that I need to replace this. Do I just cut it back and then install a new wire?

3. Has anyone ever used the Jegs Chevy HEI streetspark distributor? Anything I should look out for?

I am a novice when it comes to this and need some very clear help. Thanks for everyones help in advance.

You need full 12 volts on HEI and silicone wires.Clearance from firewall is usually a problem so you might want to check fit first.

For a neat install, get the original style connectors for the hei.
Cut the white fabric covered wire back as close to the bulkhead connector as you reasonably can, and solder on a new 12 guage stranded wire. run the wire thru the original harness and terminate it with the correct connector for the hei, do the same thing with your tach wire and retape the harness.

HEI uses spark plug style wire connectors. If the wires you have were the "build em yourself" kind, and they came with both style connectors and boots, you can just cut the connectors off and crimp on the other set, if you kept em. Otherwise you'll need new wires.

Can someone measure and post the diameter of an hei cap?

If you measure the cap you have now, subtract that form the hei diameter, and take half, plus a bit, that's how much bigger it will be. If you have that mucbh clearance now, it will fit.
