Hi,

What starter would folks recommend for a 1970 350 camaro engine? block#3970010, this block was also used for 1969. I AM GETTING TIRED OF REBUILT STOCK STARTERS THAT DO NOT SEEM TO LAST. I have headers so a mini type might work better to avoid headers and common heat soak solenoid problem. Anyone have good luck with a particular starter? Where purchased and cost is also helpful.

I've got the one Rich linked and my dad's got one on his old F150 that has always had a dragging starter. Both work great and are Delco units. One third the weight, twice the torque, half the amp draw. I bought both from DB Electrical.

153 Tooth, PM301, $65 regular or $90 for chrome plated
168 Tooth, PM300, $55 regular or $90 for chrome plated

I bring all my starters and alternators to a local rebuilder who does them right. I will not buy a rebuilt unit from a chain store. I made that mistake once. The "rebuilt" alternator had used brushes in it and a dry bearing, but it was in a nice shiny case. Many are reasssembled to borderline specs to pass nominal resale requirements. In the long run it's cheaper for the company to replace a few under warranty than to do quality rebuilds acrosss the board. And many people don't even go through warranty so it's even more money for them. I keep Delco starters and alts on hand and when I need one I have it rebuilt properly.

Been running one of these for several years. They claim it's the same starter you can buy at the GM dealership and used on new GM vehicles. Here's their website...

I have used MANY of the starters that DJD has linked to on my own cars and customer's cars over the years.They are the best starters out there for the money.Dont get a low buck "racing starter" since they are mostly junk.There is one thing that you really need to pay attention to with the GM starters.Most of them have a metric sized bolt hole that uses a metric sized knurl on the bolt,you need a special bolt that has a metric shank where it goes thru the starter body and is stepped down to the 3/8" knurl and thead where it goes into the block.If the starter doesnt come with the bolts{I buy my starters brand new from a local shop and they dont have the bolts} you can get them from Scoggin Dickey or Pace for about $3 each.Keyword in starter bolts on their seach engine since they dont typically list them on their links.

I have the same starter that Rich and Dennis have shown. I put it on when I first got my 69 about 4 yrs ago. No problems. It is a gear reduction starter. Clears my headers. Just make sure you specify for a 153 or 168 tooth flywheel.

In the good old days a person could walk into a parts store and get the kit; brushes, bushings, and bendix. Never had to think about reshimming. Now, around here, you can't.

And in the good old days the starters were still junk:) Big old heavy chunks of iron that were slammed up against the headers and overheated,drew way too much amperage even when they were brand new,and had maybe a little more then half the cranking speed and torque as a current GM mini starter.For a hundred bucks you can get something that guys couldnt dream of back then.
