Just installed a new "mini" starter on my '69 Z28 (NOM). The new starter has only 2 wires;
main power from bat and switched wire from ign.
Original starter had 3 wires: main power,switched, and wire from starter to coil(resister).
The problem: only 3 vlts at the coil, not near enough to start.
I understand a wire from switched ign. with a resister, to the coil will solve the problem?
How heavy a wire and what valus resister, if any, inline?

That third wire you did not hook up the yellow one runs to the positive side of the coil, this sends direct battery voltage to the coil while the engine is cranking.
the second wire at the coil is the resistor wire that cuts the voltage down while the engine is running. the yellow wire is dead while the engine is running.
It is this yellow wire from the starter that you want install a switch in. you should run straight from the battery. Remember if you forget to turn the switch off while the engine is running the points will fry up real fast.
Maybe switch to an HEI Distributor, the yellow wire is not needed then.

In theorey you could put a diode in the yellow wire and attach it where the purple sol wire attaches. sol voltage would run the ign, when starting, but when the key is released the diode would prevent the ign voltage from triggering the soleniod.
You would need at least a 20 amp diode.
Get the polarity right on the diode.

The other way would be to get a small 12v relay like they use for headlights on new chevies. Wire it in to be triggered by the purple sol wire, to provide bat voltage to the coil only under starting. When purple wire goes off, the relay should open.
Or go to a hei or pertronix or other electronic ign.
