Noticed above 4500 RPM I get a bad vibration can't tell if it's engine or driveline, poked my head in out and under the car today put my hands on the vibration balancer. It didn't wobble or anything but I stuck a flashlight behind it and seen the rubber squeezing out. Squeezed my fat fingers behind it and it's definatly rubber/plastic material coming out between the inner and outter rings. Found my vibration issue.. Worn balancer. Here's whats getting me... The balancer that's on the car now measures 6.75" across and just shy of 1.75" ~1.70" thick. I go to order one from summit and it says the stock balancer is 6.75" X 1.25" thick I also checked at the local parts store and other inter web sites all stock 327 balancer are that. Whats up with mine?! I can't find a matching one for my engine. Do I get the stock replacement balancer and order a new crankshaft pulley to match my existing driven equipment? Or does someone know where I can find this odd size balancer? Or should this size never have been on my engine to begin with? Thanks for the help!

Unless you want to spend more $$ , go with a Fluidamper series but I don't think you need it.
Also, you would need some type of puller AND INSTALLER, so if you don't have one, local parts stores that sell a 7" balancer will loan you the kit. Don't forget to replace the front seal while you are at it. Also, if you have a bolt holding this on, replace it if possible. Some 327 did not have tapped crank bolt holes so if there is no hole, that makes the INSTALLER tool worth less. Just use a block of wood and the ford tool (big hammer) and tap on easily. Remember here, by tapping this on, you are actually tapping on the rear crank thrust bearing surface. Go EASY.
All early balancers have 3 pulley mounting holes so there should be no issues here.

Thanks for the tips, whats odd to me is the width of my current damper. Only ones I found that are that thick are some BBC ones. Guess I'm going to have to get a new crank pully so my belts line up correctly to, Won't match with this extra thick damper. Good call to replace the front main seal didn't even cross my mind.

Just a thought, but are you sure the difference in thickness of the dampner isn't on the backside rather than the front? It would seem very unlikely to me, that a manufacturer would make a replacement part that would result in misalignment of the belts.

X2, what I was about to say.. You most notice the distance from the back of the balancer to the timing cover. Thick or Thin,

This is not any help but the diameter of the harmonic balancer on my 67 is 6 1/8".

My across measurement is 6-3/4" my confusion is the thickness of the damper I currently have on it. Here are some


This thing is 1-3/4" wide!!!

If you can see behind it in the pic all the rubber fraying and coming out



I have a long style water pump



My concerns are; is this just a cover over this harmonic damper or this thing is really 1-3/4" wide?! I'm fine with replacing a stock 6" X 1-1/4" damper but that will pull my current pulleys back half an inch and my cuurent pulley wouldn't line up to my belts so I would need a new crank pulley. Can someone please tell me the correct parts I need? I'm assuming stock damper and 3 groove crank pulley long water pump style??? I only have two belts running off my current pulley - P/S and water pump/alt I notice my current pulley is a 2 groove but has offset spacing in between. This is probably a newbie question but I'd rather not order the wrong parts just to send them back bc I got the wrong stuff. Thanks for your help!

Nate, It looks like you have the same timing cover as I do, rigid. You currently have a wider balancer , 1.750" and I have a 1.250. Its a GM HIPO part that is 6.750 diameter.
I have 1/2" room behind my balancer and you have less. You probably have the widest of all , BUT pulleys on all still bolt in the same bolt circle pattern, .

All GM sbc balancers are the same distance from the face of this pulley bolt circle to the end of the crank snout , this is where they stop on the crank.

So If you order a Proform, Fluidampner, ATI, 6 3/4" diameter , they will all bolt up the same. I am using a 12551537 balancer.
You should not have any issues using the pulley you have.

Al is correct, I thought the pump looked tight against the cover but I was more focused on the balancer.
Here is another decent balancer , if you want to spend more $$ there are others .

Just thinking again, most newer balancers have a different TDC mark, I think your 327 has the mark 2°before the key way where the later years have it 10°. You can transfer your mark from your balancer with some type of marking paint or just change to adjustable timing pointer. Pull up the link I sent your and there is a better description.

Awesome just the answers I've been looking for. I'll go ahead and order a standard 6.75" X 1.25" damper and no new pulley. Makes sense that they all mount the same distance out but my damper extends further back toward the timing cover. I appriciate all your input this thick damper was throwing a wrench in my head!

I like the Professional brand but either one of these are Not SFI-approved. I think you have to spend a few more bucks to get one of these approved balancers. If you feel sleep better , go for a better one. The one I got from GM performance is not approved .
But if I had to do it again, I would go for the Fluid dampner or ATI . Never had anything else but GM Performance stuff. Go for it.

Last question- anyone know which size bolt I'll need? 7/16-20RH ?? Not sure of the length either?

Application calls for 2.250" Do not try to pull the balancer on with this bolt. I have heard of guys using a longer stud , washers and maybe a bearing to pull this on but if you do have the tapped hole, Autozone or Oreilly will lone you the install tool, just buy the seal from them and you got a good balancer installer for price of seal. You do have to pay a refundable deposit. I think the entire kit comes with the balancer remover and installer.
