Hey Guys, I have an oil leak that I just can't seem to figure out, it seems to leak after I have run the car and it takes a couple of hours for it to start. I went to shim my starter last weekend and noticed it was accumulating on the starter bolts and also seems to be coming down the transmission side of the bellhousing.

I use a pic of Gary's (TraxUnderground, thanks Gary) engine shot to point out the spots.

Any thoughts on what it might be? Its dry behind the distributor and seems dry toward the back of the valve covers too.

If it were the oil pan would it be able to be on the transmission side od the bellhousing? And if it were the main seal wouldn't the oil leak be more on the driver's side rather than the passenger due to the direction of the flywheel spinning?

Rear main seal leak for sure, at least for the arrow with the dribbles...
Assuming all of the bolts in the back (cam, sending unit ports) of the block are not leaking.

Drew..I have the same oil leak as you but I have some on my oil filter also. The leak I have down by your dotted line is from my tko600 not engine oil. If you have a manual tranny especially a muncie they are known to leak from the bottom shaft area and leak down between the bellhousing and the tranny. It will leak towards the front of the bellhousing when sitting and also on the tranny from the air movement from driving. Everything inside my bellhousing and my clutch seem to be bone dry. I am yanking the tranny to take for warrantee service as soon as us NJ TC'ers have to hibernate for the winter. Once its out I plan to remove the scattershield and flywheel to inspect the rest. Curios to see how you make out too.

Heres a pic I dug up from my old muncie leaking from the front of the trans....a liitle black permatex solves that issue

Thanks Gary! Yes, for sure that is one spot, looks exactly like that. Same here as far as inside the bellhouing it's dry. Hopefully I will have time this week to get it to my buddy's warehouse and get it up on the lift to trace it and the other leak. Thanks again!

I'll let you know how I make out.

I just fixed a leak that showed up on the starter bolts. It was from the timing chain cover,oil ran down the oil pan rail,until it reached the starter and dripped off the bolts. Oil leaks can blow alot of oil back at highway speeds.

Thanks Dana, I will keep that in mind too when I am checking.

One of the worse parts is that my oil is clean so it's tought to trace.

I just fixed a leak that showed up on the starter bolts. It was from the timing chain cover,oil ran down the oil pan rail,until it reached the starter and dripped off the bolts. Oil leaks can blow alot of oil back at highway speeds.

I did almost the same, pulled the motor to replace oil pan and forgot to look for the leak while it was out. No oil in the motor, there was no leak. lol:)

I'm having the exact same leak problem. The frustrating part is I pulled the motor this summer and replaced the rear main seal and it still leaks bad. Grrrrrrrrrrrr

My trans leaks and coat's the floor pans, occasionally it seeps through the carpet? Even though there are no holes...
Running a light weight oil in some trans will cause them to leak through the shaft and front seal.

I also had a very similar leak that I was having trouble tracing; as someone previously stated, the breeze blows it all back and it's hard to determine the source. I pulled my 350 to put a 302 in over the winter and when I went to remove the fuel pump I found my leak... Check your fuel pump mount for leaks too....

Finally got the car on a lift, the leak was coming from the rear of the oil pan, tightened the bolt and pushed the gasket up a little. 24 hours of sitting and no leak as of yet.

Changed the rear pinion seal too, took my guy 15 minutes charged me $40.

Wish I had room in my garage for a lift, makes life so easy.

Still have to pull my tranny out and replace some seals where I am getting some weeping from the linkage seals.

There is a product you can put in the oil. 24 hours later you take a black light with regular lights off and the leaking oil glows allowing you to trace where the leak is coming from.

I have had the same problem with my Tremec TKO-600 trans. It actually leaks between the bellhousing and the trans, my bellhousing is dry inside. I talked with a Tremec rep at a show and he informed me that there was some problems with the early transmissions but it sounded like the problem had been taken care of. Mine has leaked since day one and I have become very frustrated with it. I was told that the plug in the front was the problem. My warrantee expired because I did not want to pull the trans and send it back and go through the hassle for a small drip. It will leave a couple of drips everytime I park the car. I recently pulled the engine and while it was out I pulled the front bearing cover and recaulked it as recommended by the rep and installed some caulk over the plug. After replacing everything the leak is still the same as before. My guess is that you have the same problem if your bellhousing is dry inside.

I had a very similar leak, turned out to be a very, very slow leak coming from the right rear edge of the intake. The oil would "puddle" in the little lip below the head and when I'd take corners or hit bumps it would splash down onto the starter and then get blown back onto the bell housing and the bottom of the tranny. Had a hard time tracing it as my block is painted gloss black. Had to pull the valve cover and distributor to get a good enough view with an inspection mirror that it was indeed the leak. Popped the intake, new gaskets and sealer and no more leak.
