metal to metal. Check both surfaces for dings. Prime the pump before install(pour oil in it and turn it so it sucks the oil down not pushes back). yeah most of it gets all over but you've still primed the pump and know it will pump.
There is however, supposed to be a gasket between the filter adaptor and block. I've seen too many of them on cherry OEM blocks to let some zit faced child at O'reilly tell me there is no such gasket. Which also doesn't mean I haven't built a couple dozen that I didn't put a gasket there.
