I have a one wire alternator on a 69 Camaro (383 motor). It has worked fine ever since I have had the car. (2 years) I drove the car Sunday and the charging system seemed to be working fine, I drove it again Monday afternoon and the volt gauge showed it was not charging( 11 1/2 volts). I took the alternator off and had it checked, Of course the Regulator and diodes were bad. My question is I wonder what caused it to go bad all of a sudden. I just don't want it to go bad again. The shop said to check the wire to the battery, if it was loose that might cause it to go bad or it may have just failed because of fatigue. Once it was reinstalled and everything checked it seems to work better than ever. 14 volts and all the light seem to be brighter and stable. Any one have any ideas on anyother reason for it to fail?

I guess everyone just wants to view and no one has any helpful comments. LOL Thanks anyway I know it is a weird question.

You didn't mention the brand, but I've seen several "offshore" 1-wire alternators fail, some soon after installing, and some at a later date.

I had 2 that went into an overcharge condition, burned up, and boiled the battery for the customer.

That's why I only use Powermaster now.
