How much trouble will I get into if I get caught with my race ready exhaust cut outs open on the street?


Also is it true if you run open headers when it is cool out that your exhaust valves will become brittle because they cool off too fast? How warm does it have to be not to worry about that happening?

I havent ever heard of that happening to exhaust valves becuase of open exhaust.

I too have heard (and seen the supposed result one time on an Eagle Talon) of having an exhaust leak allow cool air to cool a valve too quickly causing it to crack.

I've heard this before many years ago. I've run open headers in the dead of Michigan winter when working on a car in the shop, ran it outside, and have never had a problem. I suppose in theory it can happen, but I would think the temperature change would have to be so quick and so severe I just don't see it happening traveling all the way up the header to the valve and not warming up before it gets there, iron and aluminum heads hold heat for a long time, while the headers are thin and cool quickly the will still draw heat from the heads at the primary flanges.

All the aircraft piston engine I've worked on either had mufflers or in the case of the Jacobs or Pratt radials had exhaust rings that the cylinders dumped the exhaust gases into. The cylinders at the bottom of the radial engines had the least amount of run before exiting the exhaust pipes and I have never heard of problems particular to those cylinders regarding exhaust valves cracking or warping. Differential compressions tests would show these problems and I haven't experienced any, but then I've been away from pistons and working on jets for the last 20 years.

Yes you will get ticketed, your neighbors will call the police and with Murfy's Law for your name, if it can happen it will!

or you get flaged down by a crazy mommie telling you to slow down, because your car sounds like its going really fast when in fact i was going 20 five below the 25 limit, but the mom didn't care she just saw a kid driving a 69 camaro and thought i was some punk kid who was going to run over her son. That was my first time to drive it with open headers took it to the gas staion and home, so i could get exhaust the next day. She really made me mad though, if i was a bad kid i would have done a big fat burnout in front of her house, but instead i went home.

When I used to own a mud bogging truck you would have to be careful and not let the truck stall in deep water as sometimes the water was over the top of the engine I ran straight headers and I have seen water run up the headers when submerged and bend some valves from cooling to quickly you will not have to worry about that though go to the track almost every car there runs open headers unless they have a muffler rule.
As far as the cut outs go you could install a pair behind the headers and still run full exhaust when you want open headers jus pull a knob that comes with kit this will slide open the cut outs and you will have open exhaust see a cop comming push in the knob to close the cutouts works sorta like a choke cable on a lawnmower. Which time? I was a little crazy in my youth. Spent one weekend in jail actually for curfew violation (I was 17) and for an uncased hunting rifle they found under the seat. What they didn't know was we were shooting rabbits in the headlights along country roads. Then a few months later I was driving an old milk truck with about 8 of my buddies in the back and we went on an egg throw spree. 6 of us got 5 counts of disorderly conduct which then amounted to a $90 fine or 18 days in jail. I lasted 13 days until I had enough cash in my wallet to buy my way out.
I don't even want to think about some of the stuff I did that I didn't get caught at. I'm 53 now and I think I've settled down a little. I'll find out when I get my 350 running.

I don't think that it would have any effect on the exhaust valves. Engines equipped with an A.I.R system have cooler air blowing on the hot exhaust valve constantly with no ill effects.
Where I used to live years ago, I would start up my 69 drag car in the garage. The lady who lived two houses away came over and said that the plaster was falling off of her walls from the vibration. She said that she was going to get up a petition to get me thrown out of the neighborhood. I told her that, if she brought it over, I would sign it.
