I have a 1970 Camaro that need the all new floor panels and door skins also new trunk pan I was told by the person I took it to do the work that it will cost 4800 to 5300 just in labor which he said was 80 hours of labor to do the work that is not including the parts I have to buy. Now i am new to this I am only 18 so I would like to know if I am getting ripped off or if this is the true price because I think that is just a little high.

I would get a couple different quotes so you have an idea of the range. Remember cheap isn't always good and top dollar better be. Check out this web site. graverobberssheeetmetal.com They have a section for parts and labor they charge for 67-69 Camaros. Might give you something to go by. I know you have a 1970 but it will give you an idea. I do not know these people and have never seen there work. Just trying to get your wheels turning to negotiate a good deal for yourself. Bottom line is shop around and ask for references and see what kind of work he does and if he warranties his work. Good Luck.

Where are you located? Maybe someone can recommend a local shop. Multiple quotes is a definite must and most of the cost in body work is labor. While the price doesn't sound unreasonable for what needs to happen. You may save some money by finding replacement doors on craigslist. The sheetmetal is the cheapest part. Maybe now is a good time to work on your metal fab skills! $5K gets you a lot of tools! Just sayin!

The good Ol' days!

Around here, $70+Hr shop rate for someone that knows and regularly works on classic and custom cars.

Macco type places $50~60hr maybe.

Whatever you do make sure you 1st hand see work the shop has done and talk to the owners of the cars about their experience with the shop.

I agree with what john posted. I have seen some work done by the mentioned shop in post 2. Was not pretty. The car I saw is owned by a member here. He got robbed. All the metal they installed was removed . he had to start all over again. His car was a first gen. Maybe a second get will have better results, but that is opinion I guess. Look at the shops work. Ask car owners that have had work done by the shops you are considering what they think. If you are not sure what good/quality work looks like , take a person with you that does know. Someone without a dog in the fight. I wish you luck.

Like Mr. Don Dutton implied, if you take out the seats, carpeting, center console, and gas tank you should get a discount.

Does the labor include seam sealing the joints and painting the parts? These are another two items you can do yourself.

Make sure they will reinstall all the little brackets that are not part of the replaced items. I am talking about the ones that are welded to the pans. Some examples are spare tire brackets, seat mounting brackets etc.

If you are going to replace the door skins, are you planning to repaint the whole car?

At 18 I hope you have a good job or real nice parents, these old cars ain't cheap to play with,even when you work on them yourself they can still be costly, but fun if you truly enjoy it.

Lots of good answers here, but for all of the work he needs done, new floor pans and trunk, which is nearly the entire bottom of the car and both door skins...quoted prices sound about right. 80 hours is roughly two weeks of work at 40 hours x 2 weeks. Now, we know said fabricator won't be working on the car 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, but for sake of argument, I'm just saying. We also know cutting out the old stuff, tacking in the new stuff and then finally welding it is no drop in the bucket. Even at the highest price he stated of $5300 diveded by 80 hours comes to a $65/hour for a shop rate. That's not bad. I think the deficit here is the kid is 18 years old. Not the work quoted. We're not gonna even begin to mention the extra time it takes to make majority of the crappy, aftermarket pieces fit correctly. Think about that...it's a lot more factors here than just adding numbers. C'mon guys, we all know this. :clonk:

The place you mentioned I looked up and found that they are near me and gave them a call and they said that they would do the work for 3300 for the floors they said it would be 1200 for the work and them buying the floors, then the doors would be 250 for labor then 100 per door skin. Then for the trunk I can’t remember how make the labor and part was but it added up to 3300 and they would be putting it up on a jig to do the work. the place I originally took it to do the work we’re just going to be putting it on a lift to do it. And I thought that was kinda weird because i believed you could not do it on a lift. But thanks for telling me about this place because I would have never found it and of all things it was in Georgia and in Forsyth

As mentioned before.... Check out any shops work before Havving a shop do the job. Also price is not everything. Good luck with your build. I love second gen Camaro's.

Hey Johnny, I am by no means endorsing that shop. I have never seen their work. In post #9 it was stated that he saw some of their work and it was BAD. You better ask them to show you their work and give references of people you can talk to and even see the work they did. Not trying to scare you off, just be careful and don't jump in because it is cheaper. Make sure the work is quality by seeing some of the jobs they did and talking to the car owners.

The above advice is good. If it helps the car I saw had them blast it, destroyed the original roof, floors, quarters, doors, and trunk floor. The car was sent from VA on a recommendation . I don't think they did any seam sealing, they might now though. Work was done. Sent back to VA. Then sent to a shop in Connecticut to have the metal removed and replaced again. He ended up having more in body and paint when it was all said than most have in their entire builds. It is a great looking car now, but some hard lessons were learned. I can't stress enough that if you are not sure what to look for, take someone who does to whatever shop you choose. You are very young, I would hate to see you get taken advantage of and sour you from this hobby.

I had both the floor and the trunk replaced in my 68. I stripped the car down to the bare body and delivered it to a guy I was referred to by a friend. I realized when I got there that I forgot the new seat mounts so had to go back to my house - an hour later I arrived and the guy had already cut the entire floor out with a plasma cutter. Anyway, he put about 20 hours into the entire project and it cost me about $1200 plus about $800 in parts. I was lucky to find someone that really knew 1st gen Camaros (he had a 69 SS that was really, really nice). He welded in the floor and trunk, cut the hole for the shifter and even put the other various holes needed for the console. Now, he had this huge garage attached to his house, so was just doing the work on the side, but it was a hell of a deal, given how bad the car was. Years later, I'm still working on getting the car back on the road, but I know the body and floors are rock solid. Check around with local car clubs and get at least one or two more quotes...

know once a quarter is off the pieces behind there may be rusted too. Hopefully you can just blast/paint them to keep it from getting worse. These cars are so old its hard to tell. Where theres a little theres usually a lot more.
Big commitement....if it seeems like to much now cut your losses sell and get one done.
Theres classic car finance companies. I did 1 frame off..never again. Due to 2 body shops it turned me off. When people say how did you spend almsot 100k on a white Camino...lol
Not hard to do. Avoid bling and youll save big.
