I am in the process of replacing the springs on my 69. I was having problems getting both sides to align centered in the wheel well so I removed all parts a second time. I then installed all parts except the rubber pads to see if everything would align properly, and it did. However, I noticed when the car was sitting on all fours, there was a 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch gap between the bottom of the spring and the perch. Is this normal? Do the pads actually take up that much space?

You might try polly pads, they tend to hold things tighter.
If your rubber pads are old they may be squashed a bit but I think they take up about a quarter inch each.

Thanks David, the pads are new. Another question though, how do you align the springs and perch with the spring stud? When I lowered the rear onto the spring I found it difficult to find the top of spring stud with the pad in place with the hole in the spring perch.
