New to the camaro world, would it be possible to have a 396 SS with an open rear end ? numbers match on the motor and trans, date codes on axle tube are good for the build date. Ratio is 3.07

Hi all, new to the camaro world mostly a mustang guy , but dont hold that against me. Just traded for a 69 SS396 375HP and all looks good except for the rearend.

Yep, it is possible. 12 bolt was required with the 396, but posi was not required. My car originally was a 3.73 open 12 bolt.

Now if your car is a true original L78, in my opinion it probably did not originally have a 3.07 open rearend. But I could be wrong. What transmission does it have? That could make a difference.

I am pretty sure in his second post he said it was an L78 - 375 hp version. I don't think 3.07 would have been the standard in that case, but I could be wrong.

Does anyone have a listing of the 1969 Camaro Power Teams Chart for reference to this thread?

I am also looking for the one from 1968 so see what a 3.73 open 12 bolt rearend might have been standard with.

For 1969, posi was only required on 3.73:1 and numerically higher gear ratios, so an open 3.07 is very common.

Yeah, those "low HP" 396/325 and 396/350 cars had a standard ratio of 3.07 open.

My 1969 Power Team chart does not show the 396/375 engine so I don't know what was standard, but 3.07 open does not sound right.
Is the engine numbers matching?
What trans?
