Hi

I own a very original 67 Convertible RS/SS. This weekend we had our first family trip with the Camaro.
That means our daughter with a friend and we two adults. Two cases in the trunk, and the tank was filled. The joy wasn't long, with every little bump on the road, and the roads here aren't really bad here in Switzerland, the exhaust hit the mono leaf spring very noisy.
I like original cars, but I also like to drive the car with my family. But I need to do something against this hitting.
Unfortunately, I have no experience with Camaros rear suspension.
The first question I have, is this normal on a original mono leaf car?
Is my mono leaf spring worn out?
Will a new mono leaf help me to avoid this problem?
Do I need to change to a multi leaf solution?
If yes, what would be the best solution to keep a little originality?

What is your experience and your suggestion for me?

I already checked the exhaust pipe and fix them at the highest position. But it's not enough.
Here are some pictures of the cars situation. The pictures where made with a full tank and the top down. Without any person in the car and the trunk is empty.

What should I do?

With that much weight in the car even changing the springs will not solve the issue unless you go to a multi-leaf that will be a stiffer ride when not loaded up.

Some air shocks would do the trick and allow you to adjust for loads. Although not original it would be the easiest and least expensive route.

Yes those are the air shocks I was was referring to.

How does the car sit without anybody in the car?

If you push up and down on the rear does the exhaust hit?

Your original springs may be sagging. You can have them re-arched if theee is a local place that can do it or you can replace them. However replacement spring are hit or miss in my experience.

The car is a little low if the spare tire is in the trunk and the tank is full. But not too bad.
If I use my full weight (90kg) to pull down with with a little bounce, it is possible to hit the spring.
Yes, maybe the old springs are not in good condition anymore. I have the possibility to re-arched them here in Switzerland, but I will do this during the winter time.

I think I will go with air shoks and try how it works. They are cheap and easy to install.

I agree that the air shocks will help immediately and will not detract the originality. A lot of Camaro owners installed air shocks back in the day. I would think that you could obtain them locally as well, saving on freight from the states.

It's got to be awesome to enjoy the Swiss landscape while driving in a 1967 Convertible Camaro! Send some pics!

I just ordered these in US. ..and yes, transport is the same price as the item itself. But still much cheaper then here in Switzerland, so no problem.
I was in the mountains last weekend for a classic car show, but the weather was really bad. Cloudy and rain, so no picture this time.
But I will make some pictures on my next trip.

I suggest you carry a battery powered tire inflator so you can adjust ride height as needed.

That's a good solution, John.
Have anyone an idea what kind of connector such air shocks have?
Picture or description?
Have to order a matching connector.

Same as your tire valve. The kit should come with everything you need to install. It’s a very simple installation.

Wow, that's fast. Only 2 and a half day after my order in the states, I have the shock absorbers in my hands here in Switzerland.
Now I need some free time to assemble them on the car. Have to find a good place for the air connector.
Looking forward to test it, hope I can do it over this weekend.
