Three of my buddies have 4th gens 94'Z28, 00'Z28, and an 01' and they can take quite a beating but the rear is nothing to write home about. The 00' banged 2nd and sent the pinion threw the diff cover down the road from my house.
The LS1 in a '98 - '02 is very reliable but like anything if you beat on it you run the risk of breaking it. The 4th gen rear end is the weak link when mated with a stick shift. At the track they were breaking them all the time.
