Hey guys -

I've got my new VWW 17x9.5s installed on rear with 275s. Not surprisingly, it's far too tight, so I need to roll lips. I'm looking at renting the Eastwood fender roller tool versus baseball bat, etc. What else have you done to do a nice job of rolling AFTER paint? I need to pick up a lot of room so perhaps I'm cutting AND rolling.

Thoughts?

Thx Mike. My backspace is the prescribed 5.5"R and 4.75"F. The driver side rear inner well gap is tight so I may run a .125" spacer since there is extra outer room on that side.

I have used the tool once and it's one of those things that the more you have done it the better it comes out. You will want to heat the area you are working and go slow always keeping the area heated up. I used a heat shrink gun, your wife's hair blower won't do the trick.

Since you are thinking about renting the tool you might look into having it done instead. I spoke to a body shop that wanted $100 a wheel then checked craigslist and found several local places that specialize in rolling fenders for $25 - $35 a wheel. As it turns out all these lowered tuners running around do it to fit their tires and wheels too... At those prices it's not worth renting the tool and learning how to do it on a car that was just painted!

I have a very similar situation. I read many of the previous posts that talked about rolling and grinding. The rolling ones require an expensive on-time tool and you can mess up your paint job. The grinding has the problem of potential rust if you open up the seam between the inner and outer fenders.

I took a really good look at my situation. Turns out I had put on some tire black and that ended up getting deposited on the fender inner lip right where the wheel was coming into contact. It is a section about 4 or 5 inches long. Closer look revealed that one of the two fenders, pretty sure it is the inner fender, is longer than the outer fender. Meaning one over hangs the other. It is that overhang that is causing my rubbing.

I cannot think of any reason not to grind down that over hang. I will not bet getting into the weld between the inner and out fenders that seals moisture out.

I will take a much closer look at it before I take any action however.
